Lana

I’m really nervous. I keep tugging at my dress hem while I ride in Tomas’ truck. I never thought I’d borrow a dress from Lacey. I mean, I used to borrow her tops all the time, but those were shirts she never wore because they were too trendy for her. Borrowing a dress is different because that’s all she wears practically. She loaned me a jersey shirt dress. It’s navy blue and hits me mid-thigh. I’m wearing tights, loafer heels, and my dress coat. I feel weird. I haven’t worn a dress in a long time. Tomas is taking me to his house for Thanksgiving dinner at noon, and then we’re eating at Nana’s this evening. His fingers drum his steering wheel as he waits to turn onto the country road that leads to his house. This will be the first official time I’ve been to his house. He’s managed to keep me from meeting his parents for weeks. I was beginning to wonder if he was ashamed of me, but when I told him that, he only kissed me softly and whispered, “Never.” I think he’s as anxious as I am. He’s wearing a nice shirt and tie with dress slacks. I’m glad that I erred on the side of formal even if it’s just semi-dress. It’s better than jeans and a hoodie, my usual get-up. When we arrive, he smiles at me before climbing out. I wait for him to open my door, and he comes around and helps me down. He squeezes my hand encouragingly as we make it to the door. I recognize his mom from his Status Quo pictures, and she smiles warmly as she meets us at the door. She’s elegant in a nice dress and heels. Her short, layered bob is styled perfectly.

“You must be Lana,” she smiles as she gives me a hug, and I return it. “We’ve heard such wonderful things about you. I’m Bridget. Come let’s introduce you to Jose.” She smiles at Tomas and me as we follow her from the entryway into the formal living room. Tomas’ dad sits in a chair in a suit. His face is relaxed, and I see Tomas’ mannerisms in him.

“Jose, this is Lana, Tomas’ girlfriend.” Bridget smiles again, and Jose rises to shake my hand. I step forward and skake firmly, remembering the lecture my dad gave Lacey and me about the importance of a firm handshake and first impressions.

“Lana,” he says with a slight accent. His expression becomes guarded, and he looks at me suddenly like he recognizes me. It’s unnerving how fast his demeanor hardens in front of me. He drops my hand, and Tomas instinctively takes my other. Tomas noticed too; it wasn’t just me. I glance at Bridget who is now wringing her hands. Jose stares at our hands, and mine begins to sweat.

“Shall we eat? I believe the turkey is ready,” Bridget says, as she glances at her wristwatch. Jose tears his stern eyes away from our hands and nods to his wife.
